COMMAND

    DNR

SYSTEMS AFFECTED

    Win2000

PROBLEM

Abe Getchell found following. He has seen inquiries about this
posted on a few newsgroups and send out this to let you know
little bit more about this issue. It appears that when there's a
large amount of entries in the DNR cache (more then 500), running
    'ipconfig /displaydns' causes a buffer overflow, 'services.exe'
    crashes, and the system reboots.

    To repro this problem:

        1) Add 500 or more entries to your 'hosts' file.
        2) From a command prompt, run 'net stop dnscache' and 'net start dnscache'.
        3) From a command prompt, run 'ipconfig /displaydns'.
        4) Watch 'services.exe' crash and the server reboot.

This issue effects Windows 2000 Professional, Server and Advanced
Server. Of course, until the fix is available and installed on
your system, DON'T RUN THE COMMAND ON YOUR PRODUCTION BOXES.

SOLUTION

Abe has been working with Microsoft on this and a public fix will
    be available via Q262637.
