COMMAND

    MS Exchange

SYSTEMS AFFECTED

    Win NT running MSE 5.0

PROBLEM

If a subject line is too long in an SMTP message, the IMC dies
attempting to deliver the message. This was found by Sean Boulter
because former employee built an Exchange rule to forward all of
his mail to another account in another company (xyz.com). The
fine folks at xyz.com then removed his account. When the next
message was forwarded to xyz.com, an NDR was bounced back to his
Exchange account here, which then forwarded it back to xyz.com.
Each time xyz.com got it, the word "Undeliverable:" was added to
the beginning of the subject line. And so the loop continued
until our IMC died because it couldn't handle such a large
    subject line.

SOLUTION

Apply Service Pack 1 for Exchange 5.0 that's placed on Microsoft's
    ftp site:

        ftp://ftp.microsoft.com

    following path:

        /bussys/exchange/exchange-public/fixes/<language>/Exchg5.0/Sp1/
