SYSTEMS AFFECTED

    SP6 <-> Compaq NC31xx NIC's

PROBLEM

    Jirka Vejrazka  fouind following.   He tried  to apply  SP6 to his
    COMPAQ Proliant 6500 server and after reboot - Oops! - bluescreen.
    There is an  incompatibility between Compaq  NC31xx LAN cards  and
    SP6 which causes BSOD immediately after "press Ctrl-Alt-Del" logon
    screen is displayed.   So, if you plan  to install SP6 on  similar
    machine, be sure to check

        %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\drivers\cpqntac.sys

    file version and

        ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/softpaq/sp11501-12000\sp11718.txt

    file (which  contains "This  SoftPaq also  addresses a  bluescreen
    error that appears  when NT 4.0  Service Pack 6  is installed", so
    at least Compaq knows about the problem.

SOLUTION

    The new version of driver (09/28/99) downloadable at this URL:

        ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/softpaq/sp11501-12000\sp11718.exe

    fortunately  resolves  this  -  so  make  sure that you apply this
    before installing SP6...
