COMMAND
Time Server
SYSTEMS AFFECTED
Win NT
PROBLEM
There is another "100% CPU use" bug encountered. Bug is located
in the Time Service shipped with the NT resource kit. It has
been determined that this bug was caused by an unusual error
message being returned from an internet time server. The time
server service may max out your CPU.
TimeServ is a service for Windows NT which can set the PC's time
accurately from a variety of sources, or synchronize the time
between various networked machines. As mentioned above, it is on
a CD-ROM as part of a larger offering of utilities and
documentation.
Symptoms are CPU's shoot up to 95-99% processor usage. Probably
started occuring around 6 am EST on 8/14/97. The time service
(which comes with the resource kit) has been running fine
previously. This is a first time occurence. Rebooting does not
fix the problem. It may only effect the primary time server.
