COMMAND

    Norton Internet Security (NIS)

SYSTEMS AFFECTED

    Norton Internet Security 2000

PROBLEM

Bacano from Esoteric Pizza Research found following. The
assumption that this is a bug its not clear, or not a bug at all,
but at least is some lack of information from Symantec. The new
Norton Internet Security 2000 based his firewall and several
protections on AtGuard (from - the ex ? - www.atguard.com). In
the page of AtGuard was/is information to inform the users that
the product was no more suported, counting from some date (21th
Dec99 ?), and they should upgrade to NIS since AtGuard was close
    to be part of Symantec.

The old AtGuard users, at least the trial version users, were not
warned - nor in NIS instalation - that AtGuard must be removed
before the NIS instalation, because if they do it later NIS stops
working ok. Why? Probably because of files with the same names
or something like it, the fact is that you can not enable NIS
protection if you dont uninstall AtGuard before installing NIS2k.

SOLUTION

This days its very simple to do a setup with some kind of date
checking to avoid things like this to happen.

NIS uses a lot of the files from @tGuard. Unfortunately, when NIS
is installed while @tGuard still exists, major problems occur.
@tGuard needs to be completely removed from your box if you intend
to trial or use NIS. This from Steve Gibson's pages:

A WARNING TO CURRENT ATGUARD USERS: The two products are still
so similar that NIS2K's files utterly collided with AtGuard's
when NIS2K was installed on the same machine! Attempting to
edit NIS2K's settings brought up AtGuard's dialog boxes! So,
at least in the case of this NIS2K beta, you absolutely must
        remove AtGuard before installing NIS2K.

Things are still obviously wrinkled for the two f/walls.
